Travels to the Tropics: A Week on Kauai with Family

I spent the last week in July on the island of Kauai, where I met my parents, my older sisters and my sisters four young children.  I spent most of my time in the water, and made only a handful of photographs, focusing on details of the landscape, the surreal red earth, the magical spaciousness of all that sea and sky, luscious fruits, unfamiliar foliage and the limber flight of my smallest relatives, constantly in motion.  Although I have incredible fondness for my childhood experiences in Hawaii, as an adult, my perceptions shift, brought into focus by my older parents, my long-gone grandparents and a new generation of young relatives.  In all of this, there persists both the bitter and the sweet, a resonating sense of fleeting time and the striking continuity of family patterns and familial bonds.
